RAMBERT 2 – JANUARY 29-30

Fierce new moves from fierce new dancers are promised when Rambert2 make their winter return to Norwich Playhouse.

Following the critical and popular success of their 2019 visit, the company will once again collaborate with exciting choreographers to showcase their breath-taking style of intense and exhilarating contemporary dance.

Performing live on January 29 and 30, the company is formed each year following a global search for new talent. They combine technical virtuosity with raw energy and perform dance pieces which aim to capture their raw spirit.

This year’s Norwich Playhouse programme will include Sin, which was originally part of the Olivier Award-winning choreography Babel by Damien Jalet and Sidi Larbi Cherkaoui. It delves into the intimacy of couples exploring how their passion can become destructive, a relationship can become toxic, and explores the battle for control by one half of a couple over the other.

Also being performed is Sama, a new work by Andrea Miller who is a leading light on the New York dance scene and is known for her visceral and imaginative work. Sama looks at how important our bodies are when it comes to expressing ourselves in a world where the digital era seems to make our living, breathing bodies less important.

And the nature of being ourselves is investigated in Terms and Conditions which explores how opposition in our bodies and lives helps us identify who and what we are in the world, and how we reconcile the importance of diversity with wanting to belong. This piece is created by top American choreographer Jermaine Spivey who has been a member of the highly regarded company Kidd Pivot  run by top Canadian choreographer Crystal Pite, and has staged Pite’s work for the likes of Cedar Lake Ballet and Netherlands Dance Theater.

John Bultitude, of Norwich Playhouse, said: “Rambert 2’s 2020 return will be another opportunity to experience some of the world’s finest young dance talent and brings to life an exciting blend of work from some incredible choreographers. This brand new programme explores various issues around our identities, how we see ourselves in the world and our relationships, and promises to be thought-provoking and challenging too.”
