SISTER ACT – MAY 1-6
The hugely popular soul singer and West End favourite Alexandra Burke is heading back to Norwich Theatre Royal to play the lead role in a global musical hit.
She takes the part of disco diva Deloris Van Cartier who has to adopt a new identity after witnessing a murder in the musical favourite Sister Act, which comes to Norwich Theatre Royal on May 1-6.
Alexandra wowed audiences when she starred in The Bodyguard in the city and is playing another iconic role in this musical hit.
Her character is placed into protective custody and hidden in a convent where she adapts to a very different lifestyle.
And her fellow Sisters find themselves motivated and revitalised by her arrival in this feel-good musical which celebrates the power of friendship, sisterhood and music.
Alexandra shot to fame after winning The X Factor which was followed up by her debut single Hallelujah which shot to Number One, and she has enjoyed a hugely successful parallel career as a stage star.
She is loving the chance to play such a varied character. She said: “Deloris is very interesting and very different to Rachel Marron in The Bodyguard but I am enjoying this adventure because it is such an honour to play her.
“It allows me to be even more open than I was playing Rachel and playing this role means I have to just let go and allow myself to trust my instincts. That is always something I have always been afraid to do because I always want to be perfect at everything.”
The show also boasts a strong creative team headed by Craig Revel Horwood who has directed and choreographed the show and says the cast are fantastic. He said: “It is so lovely that Alexandra wanted to do this show. She has an incredible voice and is also a brilliant mover and dancer so she fits into the company brilliantly well.
“We are doing it as an ensemble piece. Everyone plays different characters. They are actors/musicians so they sing, they act and they dance but they also provide the music because they play instruments. I do have to say though that it is quite an alarming sight watching a nun with a saxophone.”
