Discover the therapeutic benefits of choral singing with Norfolk award winners
Singing in a choir is officially good for you! So why not join The Voice Project Choir this autumn and winter for their latest choral-theatre piece The Distance Between Us? Anyone interested can join free no obligation taster on 11 October to ‘test the water’. Full rehearsals start on 18 October and there will be live performances of the piece on 28 January 2023 in Norwich.
The Distance Between Us is devised and directed by the choir’s co-directors Jon Baker and Sian Croose. Always intended to be performed live, during lockdown Jon and Sian worked with a filmmaker and an online choir to create an award winning film of the work. Now they are finally preparing to present the very first live performances.
Anyone can join the open access choir, no previous singing experience is needed, there are no auditions and no need to read music. Yet the choir is renowned for its large-scale choral performances and professional high-quality standards that have led to performances broadcast on Radio 3, BBC 1 and ITV and national TV in France.
In the final rehearsals, the choir will be joined by experienced professional singers and instrumentalists, staging the songs to produce uplifting and original performances.
You can find out if it’s for you at the 11 October taster session at The Friends Meeting House, Lower Goat Lane before committing to the whole project.
Jon Baker said, ‘We are a friendly and welcoming choir and always love to see new members alongside regular participants’. Sian added ‘The music is very rewarding to learn. It’s always amazing how soon new participants are singing with confidence’.
One past choir member said ‘The Voice Project is a choir with a difference. A chance to sing beautiful, original pieces of music with the composers! A lovely warm community, a chance to explore your creativity and to perform in a different way’, while another said ‘It’s so much more than just a choir. More like part of a whole glorious picture’.
As well as choir rehearsals to learn the music there will be optional online workshops with two amazing artists who are contributing to The Distance Between Us, poet Esther Morgan and choreographer and movement specialist Ellen Fisher, of the Meredith Monk Ensemble.
