CANDIDE – DECEMBER 15-17
A comic literary masterpiece forms the basis of one of the winter productions from the Norwich Theatre Royal Youth Company.
Scott Hunter’s adaptation of Voltaire’s Candide sees the unlucky and innocent lead character experience a host of bizarre and hilarious misadventures which span nine countries on a quest to be reunited with his childhood sweetheart.
These include shipwrecks, pirates, war, passion, volcanoes, riches, and lots of sheep. To add extra depth to the production, Candide’s quest is narrated by the philosopher of optimism Dr Pangloss, a generous chambermaid Paquette, and The Old Woman With Only One Buttock whose name says it all.
Scott Hunter, who has adapted the classic story for the stage, promises lots of laughs, fast-paced action and the chance to reflect on what life is all about.
And this youth company production runs at Stage Two, the Theatre Royal’s new learning and participation centre, from December 15-17.
David Lambert, who is directing the production and is also Director of the Norwich Theatre Royal’s Theatre Arts Courses, said: “The original novel was a biting satire on contemporary morals and religions, but this version adds more than a little panto-style humour. It’s a bit like Voltaire meets Carry On – jokes come thick and fast, saucy and suggestive, and there’s the added bonus of a series of educated sheep! What’s not to like?”
