In celebration of Norwich Pride 2020, which this year is going virtual, Norwich Castle Museum & Art Gallery will launch a brand-new audio series exploring LGBT+ objects in the museum collections.

With the public currently unable to visit the collections, the Learning Team at Norwich Castle have developed a new audio series, Out Loud, bringing LGBT+ histories and stories to you through the airwaves.

The first episode, which will be released on Saturday 25 July, will feature a decorative mask of Pan, a religious figure who appears in both Ancient Greek and Roman mythology. The god’s name comes from the Greek, meaning ‘all’. The focus on this Classical object will make room for a discussion about the expansive language of gender identities and sexuality used in many western societies today.

The release of this new audio series also marks a year since the launch of the museum’s popular LGBT+ tour, called ‘Time and Place’, which offers visitors new ways of thinking about some of the objects on display. The tour features everything from penguins to Jean Paul Gaultier perfume bottles, and a selection of these objects will also appear in the audio series and on the Castle’s Instagram account.

Norwich Castle will also light up in the Progress Pride colours during the Pride weekend, in solidarity with Norwich’s LGBT+ community. Share your photos with the museum on Instagram @norwichcastle and use the hashtag #QueerNMS.

Danie Hadley, Events and Visitor Programmes Officer, Norwich Castle Museum & Art Gallery says: “We’re delighted to be supporting Norwich Pride 2020 with this new broadcast initiative. In the year since the launch of Time and Place, the tour has become a popular and staple feature in the Norwich Castle events programme, and while we can’t welcome visitors back into the Castle just yet, it’s great to have found a new way of bringing our objects and their stories to the public.”

Out Loud episodes will be released weekly from the 25 July until the end of August. There are six episodes in total and they will be free to stream via the Norfolk Museums Service SoundCloud. Find Out Loud at soundcloud.com/norfolkmuseums.
